Getting to Equity in a Network of Superintendents: Issues, Approaches, and Challenges in a Wide Range of District Contexts

Sun, April 15, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, East Room 10

Abstract

This presentation reports on the documentation of a small network of superintendents over the past three years. Documentation of monthly meetings, interviews with superintendents, and collection of strategic plans show a gradual evolution from a focus on general issues of instruction to identification of several different equity concerns. Some superintendents focused on achievement gaps linked to race; some highlighted achievement gaps for special education students in general; and some highlighted the need for all students to reach higher standards of performance. The demographic, political, and human capital factors that affected the efforts to address these issues will be discussed.
