Considerable research has investigated problem-based learning (PBL), however results have been mixed and questions remain about the effectiveness of PBL for particular learning outcomes. Additionally, little is known about which motivation patterns are adaptive and maladaptive in PBL environments. The current study investigated the effectiveness of PBL in comparison to traditional instruction and the relation between learning and goal orientation in both environments. Students receiving PBL significantly outperformed students receiving tradition instruction on a transfer measure, but not on a general learning measure. In the PBL environment, transfer performance suffered slightly when strong endorsement of a performance-approach goal was paired with weak endorsement of a mastery goal. Goal orientation was unrelated to learning outcomes in the traditional environment.
