Abstract

In this essay, Patricia Graham discusses her background, educational experiences, and academic career. She has a major focus on the problems, prospects, challenges, and opportunities encountered by the academic women of her, and preceding and subsequent generations. Graham notes her midwestern routes, early education, higher education, experiences as a wife and mother, aa well as the details of her academic career. She discusses her mentor, Lawrence Cremin, at some length, and details her own career stops at Barnard College, Columbia University, Harvard University, the Spencer Foundation, and other experiences including international contacts. Gender is an abiding theme in her essay, but it is accompanied by discussion of several other issues of sigificance in the field of history of American education.
