In Mathematics we have the potential to broaden student interest in the discipline by creating activities for learning mathematics that are enjoyable, relevant, and that engage students in complex mathematical thinking and practices. In this paper, we focus on two approaches to teaching data and statistics – one focused on students inventing strategies and the other on teacher scaffolding toward formal conventions. The two approaches led to equal learning gains but varied in terms of student enjoyment.
