The Augmented Efficacy of PBS (Positive Behavior Supports) Implementation

Abstract

This study identified key factors that support and impede Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) implementation and approaches that assist in transporting model PBS practices and systems to other schools and districts. This mixed methods research design included descriptions of 10 schools in California and Florida using interviews with PBS team members, BoQ scores when available, PBS observation data, interview with a PBS District Coordinator, and analysis of Q-sort data. Findings indicate administrative support is a key factor for quality PBS implementation and lack of time impedes progress. Findings also indicate that having specific PBS criteria necessary to attain exemplary PBS implementation is essential in transporting and sustaining PBS systems throughout a district.
