The Impact of the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Program on Student Reading Achievement

Abstract

The REL Midwest and Vanderbilt University implemented a cluster randomized trial to assess the impact of Northwest Evaluation Association’s (NWEA) Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) program on teachers’ instructional practices and student achievement. The MAP program involves two components: 1) computer-adaptive assessments, and 2) teacher training and access to MAP resources on how to use data from these assessments to differentiate instruction. The study involved 32 schools and focused on grades 4 and 5 English language arts teachers and their students. Results after the second year of program implementation indicate that the MAP program was implemented with moderate fidelity but had no statistically significant impact on either teachers’ differentiated instructional practices or students’ reading achievement.
