Engaging Teachers a Second Time: The Quest for Ongoing Action Research

Sat, April 14, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Marriott Pinnacle, Floor: Fourth Level, Ambleside

Abstract

Many in-service and pre-service teachers conduct one action research project, but few continue their action research after their first experience. The purpose of this study was to examine what factors support and discourage ongoing action research. Teachers who participated in a district action research initiative were asked to complete an online survey and share their perceptions in a focus group. Factors that supported ongoing action research included gains in professional practice knowledge and skills, seeking further answers to their questions, and collaboration with other teachers. Obstacles to ongoing action research included struggles with time management, working with a team, and the lack of support from principals. This study provides a launching point in supporting teachers in continuing action research.
