Action Research and In-Service University Courses: Theoretical Concepts and Evaluation

Abstract

The Institute of Instructional and School Development (IUS) at Klagenfurt University has been offering university courses for more than 25 years. These four-semester long courses are based on the hypothesis that learning and innovations are supported best when they are developed in close connection with teaching practice and when teachers are directly involved and networked to each other and the academic community. The central element of these courses is action research: The teachers investigate their own practices in order to further develop their teaching knowledge and competences as well as theoretical understanding. In this chapter, the goals and concepts of the courses and evaluation data will be presented and reflected upon.
