Intake Procedures and Student Teacher Failure: Refining the Process

Abstract

Teacher education programs have the responsibility to graduate the most qualified and committed teachers possible and to be ‘gatekeepers’ for the teaching profession (Caskey, Peterson, & Temple, 2001). Through an admission review process, the B.Ed. program at XXXXXXX is attempting to create a profile of students who are unsuccessful in some aspect of their field experiences so that we can more effectively ‘screen out’ during the admission process those applicants who are unsuitable for the teaching profession. This paper tests out a regression model, which was previously found useful to predict success on the practicum, on a sub- group of Teacher Candidates (TCs) who either repeated or failed/withdrew from the program, and teases out common personal qualities and performance skills.
