Gay Pride on Stolen Land at the Vancouver Olympics

Sat, April 14, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton Wall Centre, Floor: Third Level, South Blue Whale

Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to contribute to the conversation about a) indigenous/settler relations in Canada and b) decolonial approaches to curriculum studies, citizenship education and physical education. The paper explores how the LGBT ‘Pride Houses’ at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics perpetuated settler colonialism in Vancouver and Canada. These Pride Houses relied upon settler colonial views about land ownership and a lack of solidarity between same-sex rights and indigenous rights. The paper foregrounds insights of Indigenous activists involved in the ‘No Olympics On Stolen Land’ protests. Drawing upon queer studies and Native studies, this example will be used to discuss how settler colonialism might be addressed in the fields of curriculum studies, citizenship education and physical education.
