Clinical Utility of Cancellation on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children

Abstract

This study examined empirical evidence for clinical utility of the WISC-IV Cancellation subtest by comparing data from 660 clinical and 660 matched-control normal children. Results of dependent t and sequential logistic regression analyses demonstrated: 1) children with mental retardation, motor impairment, head injury, autistic/Asperger’s disorder, ADHD/Learning Disability, and mathematics disorder showed significant deficits on the cancellation subtest; 2) children with mental retardation and Asperger’s disorder benefited when stimuli are randomly aligned, but ADHD children benefited from structured condition; 3) beyond Full scaled IQ and GAI-CPI discrepancy scores, the cancellation subtest added unique diagnostic power for identifying children with reading disorders, mild mental retardation, closed head injury, and motor impairment. Results suggest the importance of the cancellation subtest in clinical assessment.
