Recent work in literacy studies views social spaces and identities as co-constructed in practice, rather than as autonomous backdrops or factors impacting literacy practices and classroom literacy events. In this paper, we build on this work by integrating microethnographic discourse analysis and a physical-spatial analysis of bodies and objects during a classroom literature discussion event in a bilingual classroom. Our findings suggest how social agents’ physical and discursive moves involving a range of semiotic resources may both reinforce and reconfigure ideologies of literacy and teaching as well as student and teacher identities.
