Despite gain that women have made in gender equity, they are still generally underrepresented in the top positions in their careers. This gender disparity may be a result of girls and women having fewer opportunities to be identified as gifted and talented than boys and men do. Existing research on gender difference in identified gifted youth yields mixed results. The current study strives to resolve the discrepancies from prior research by combining results on gender differences in identified gifted and talented youth in a meta-analytic review. Moderator analyses used age, ethnicity, and process of identification to examine the gender intensification hypothesis, stereotype threat hypothesis and the greater variability hypothesis as potential explanations for gender differences in gifted and talented identification.
