We report the results of a three-stage usability test for maximizing students' productive learning time while using a map-based modeling tool. In stage 1, we conducted remote testing on an early prototype of the technology. In stages 2 and 3, we used screencasting software and video to record students’ mouse and keyboard movements during collaborative think-alouds. The results showed that students spent only a small percentage of their total computer time on relevant activities. More importantly, the results also showed that students were challenged not only by the usability of the technology, but also by the representation of knowledge within the technology. This paper details our research findings and describes a new method for studying learning with complex technologies.
