Abstract

The goal of this investigation was to examine the association between academic entitlement beliefs and actions and college students’ achievement goal orientations. A random sample of 143 university students from an educational psychology subject pool completed online surveys regarding their general and situated academic entitlement beliefs and actions and goal orientations across two courses in which they were enrolled. Results indicated that general and situated entitlement beliefs and actions were positively correlated. In addition, mastery and performance-avoidance goals were negatively correlated with entitlement beliefs. Interestingly, performance-approach goals were positively correlated with entitlement actions, but not beliefs. Multistage path analysis revealed direct effects between situated entitlement beliefs and performance-approach goals on college students’ situated entitlement actions.
