Evaluation of a Career Development Program for Ethnic Minority Students in an Urban Public High School

Abstract

We evaluated 121 Asian-American, African-American, Latino/a, Pacific Islander, and multiracial students’ participation in a school-based career development program for underrepresented, low-income ethnic minority youth. This career counseling program encouraged and taught youth to pursue careers they normally would not consider. Analysis of covariance indicated that participants in the treatment versus comparison group reported significantly higher levels of social support, school engagement, positive career expectations, interest in learning, ethnic identity, GPA, and attendance. Qualitative interviews and observations support our findings and add depth to our results.
