Abstract

A number of recent New Zealand government publications have focused on the skills and strategies students need to learn in order to become skilled readers (Ministry of Education, 2009; 2010). Equally important is an understanding of the characteristics of an effective reading teacher. In this study reading instruction was observed in four classrooms of years 5-6 and 7-8 teachers (i.e., grades 4-7) nominated by their principal as exemplary teachers of reading. A total of 44 reading lessons were observed over 10 weeks. Following the observational period each teacher was interviewed. Commonalities and differences between teachers are discussed with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the nature of effective reading teaching.
