Abstract

We tested whether situational and individual interest could be empirically distinguished in an integrated model. We hypothesized that classroom related sources of interest would predict situational interest better than individual interest and only individual interest would predict learning behaviors such as deep strategy use and effort regulation. We further hypothesized that perceived competence and utility value would moderate the relationships of situational and individual interest with other variables. Results generally support our hypotheses. Situational and individual interest had different relationships with curiosity-inducing instruction, teacher’s personal support, and learning behaviors. Furthermore, relationships among the variables in the model varied depending on the perceived competence and utility value.
