Teacher Student Relations and Job Satisfaction During the Teacher Career

Abstract

In this study, we looked at the development of teacher-student relations and teachers’ job satisfaction throughout eight teaching careers. Teachers were interviewed using the narrative-biographical method, focusing on teachers’ stories and ways in which teachers construe their perceptions of experiences across the teaching career. The data gathered with the narrative-biographical method were compared with data collected with the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction at several points in their careers. The major finding is that that for these eight teachers, there seems to be a relation between their job satisfaction and the quality of the teacher-student relation. Unsatisfied teachers tend to deny the diminishing quality of their relations with students more than satisfied teachers.
