Professional Learning Communities in Cross-Cultural Comparison

Abstract

A growing body of research examines professional learning communities in schools. But up to now, little is known about cross-cultural similarities and differences with regards to these practices. The present contribution aims at filling this research gap by comparing latent profiles of co-operation across cultures. Analyses are based on data of 24.442 teachers in seven countries. Results show that countries vary considerably with regards to the profiles. More similarity is found for the functionality of professional learning communities. Across countries, the latent profiles are related to participation in professional development, feedback and appraisal and self-efficacy at the teacher level. At the school level we find relations with school size, school autonomy and leadership style in a few countries only.
