Abstract

Previous research on teacher support lacks a conceptualization of teacher support as a multi-dimensional construct taking into account teacher and student perspectives. Using a large-scale dataset, the current study investigated dimensionality and agreement of student and teacher ratings using three core dimensions of teacher support (academic support, emotional support, student appreciation) by applying multilevel modeling techniques. The multi-dimensional construct of teacher support was then applied to investigate differential effects of teacher support dimensions on the development of student interest in German language lessons. While teacher-rated academic support showed a positive effect at the class level, student-rated academic support showed a positive effect on interest development for individual students within classrooms. Findings indicate the usefulness of including teacher and student perspectives.
