Sat, April 14, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Sheraton Wall Centre, Floor: Third Level, South Blue Whale

Abstract

Alarming numbers of youngsters do not meet the recommended daily physical activity levels and do not participate in after-school sport and physical activity programs opting instead for relatively sedentary activities. This presentation reports the educational findings of a study in which quantitative (online survey) and qualitative (personal and focus-group interviews) data from a sample of providers and stakeholders across Ontario (Canada) was collected to determine how participation rates and experiences of children and youth in after-school sports and physical activity might be enhanced. Particular consideration was given to educational factors and implications for how to increase the participation rates and experiences of marginalized groups. Emerging themes with educational implications are reported and discussed.
