Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to put forward a methodological finding and concomitant constructivist grounded theory derived from a photovoice project aimed at understanding the educational lives of community college students. The grounded theory, termed photovoice for self-authorship, suggests that the photovoice method be bifurcated: one branch focused on critical consciousness building among participants and one branch focused on reflective consciousness building. Photovoice for self-authorship, which is focused on reflective consciousness building, departs from the Freirean roots of photovoice and can be used as a tool for inquiry as well as participant identity development. This paper outlines the larger study and methodological finding in detail. The heuristic and pedagogical implications of this constructivist grounded theory are explored as well.
