Abstract

This paper examines the extent of restrictions on college faculty during and immediately following World War I, providing insight into both individual experiences and larger organizational interactions. In so doing, it extends previous work on the subject and demonstrates that the struggles were more widespread that previously understood. It further shows that faculty were frequently complicit in the attacks on fellow professors and that even noted cases of defense of heterodox faculty were often paired with restrictions at the same institutions.
