Abstract

Learning strategy research has typically focused on the frequency of strategy types. It can be assumed, however, that it is not the frequency of strategy use which influences the quality of learning processes and outcomes in the first place but the adequacy of each single strategy used during a given task. Hence, the present video study adopts a micro-analytic approach to assessing the quality of strategy use. Results show that this approach is feasible and appropriate. Adequacy of the strategies used by learners of English as a foreign language turned out to have a significant effect on the learning outcome when controlled for other predictors. Typical characteristics of students using strategies non-adequately have been identified.
