The purpose of this study was to conduct an investigation into the governance of a chain of independent state funded schools (ISFS). This was achieved by an in-depth qualitative case study of one ISFS in England which offers insights into the policies and practices implemented by the managing sponsor in the schools it runs. English ISFS development offers a valid point of comparison to the American charter school development due to the similarities of these systems. All in all these initial findings suggest that the autonomy the case study ISFS enjoys is heavily focused on the managing organisation, which is not translated to the schools it runs or the ways in which it operates.
