Abstract

This study examines the impact that image support has on a reader’s comprehension for students in grades 1-8. Using a cross sectional sample of 2,665 students from twelve states, and between 30 and 40 image items per grade span, it was found that image support does assist slightly in student reading comprehension but that the effect varied with the type of image support as well as the grade of the student. Slightly greater effects for image support were found for students in grades 1-2 than for students in grades 3-5 or 6-8.
