A variety of offices within a federal agency co-funded research projects to enhance Nanoscale Science and Engineering (NSE) education. As the field of NSE is rapidly advancing and highly technical, these projects required extensive collaboration between science researchers and educators to develop resources capable of supporting formal learning for students in grades 7-12 and informal learning for members of the general public. Science researchers provided NSE content, educators made the NSE content “digestible” to a variety of audiences, and sometimes educational researchers provided theoretical approaches to guide these collaborative efforts. This paper details promising practices to facilitate collaboration between scientists and educators to improve learning in other emerging scientific fields – affording significant time- and cost-savings to funders, educators, and learners.
