Abstract

There are faculty who embody academic citizenship, successfully and diligently completing the spectrum of their responsibilities while drawing on approaches to teaching, research, and service that stem from a commitment to active contribution to their many communities. Often lacking in material rewards, this work must be intrinsically driven may well be rooted in the same philanthropic values that inspire financial giving. Exploring philanthropy and academic citizenship is a new area of inquiry and could be undertaken in numerous forms from the philosophical to the quantitative. This study took a literal approach, examining the tangible—financial philanthropy—and the intangible—citizenship behavior—for shared characteristics in part as an effort to assess the feasibility of this avenue of research.
