Abstract

With the increase in early awareness efforts surrounding college-going, student educational aspirations have increased for students in middle school and early high school. Even though students are aspiring to college many are not taking the steps necessary to achieve that dream, particularly completion of higher level high school math. Using Social Cognitive Career Theory and data from a longitudinal project, this study examines predictors of students’ outcome expectations related to taking higher level math. The findings underscore the need for emotional support and instructional support in the classroom to promote a sense of belonging in math classes.
