Experiences of Lesbians in the Midwest: Coming Out in High School

Abstract

Three young women in the Midwest share their stories of coming out either in high school or in college. Given that lesbian identity may be socially constructed or essential, it is not surprising that initially each of these women chose “bisexual” and later changed their description to either “lesbian” or “pansexual.” Four emerging themes from their stories are demonstrated: religion, supportive organizations, the relationship with mom, and the influence of popular media. Implications for future research are proposed particularly around the influence of religion, supportive organizations, and popular media.
