This “almost exclusive attention paid to understanding the factors leading to school failure obscures the fact that there are students who share these so-called risk conditions, but who excel academically” (Arellano & Padilla, 1996, p. 486). There is a pragmatic need to chronicle academic successes of students typically identified as at-risk. The purpose of this study was to identify those variables that have played a significant role in encouraging academic success among this typically underrepresented group of students in order to provide data that can be acted upon regarding how to best assist struggling students who are not making the same academic gains as their counterparts.
