Chicana and Chicano “Pedagogies of the Home”: Learning From Students’ Lived Experiences

Sun, April 15, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, East Room 9

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to illuminate the learning experiences of Chicana/o students living in San Antonio, Texas. My study defines learning experiences as experiences in the context of the home, school, and community. Using a phenomenological approach, the aim of this study was to provide insight into the cultural capital of Chicana/o families. Additionally, I wanted to bring forth, the ways in which one parent drew upon his own schooling experiences in order to provide opportunities for his children, that he believed were not afforded by his experiences. This meant imparting stories and advice that reflected his educational experiences. This study provides implications in pedagogy and theory.
