Abstract

My study explores Chinese American women’s life stories and what it means to be Chinese American in the context of transnational cultural and intellectual flows. It is critical to examine what kind of jobs immigrant parents ended up doing, what neighborhoods American-born children grew up in, what people they interacted with, and how they related to their parents as well as to the outside world culturally and emotionally. I hope to investigate how Chinese American women make meaning of everyday life experiences in their neighborhood while negotiating with their parents’ diverse immigration processes and how education as a high priority influences their understanding of being Chinese American.
