Improving Outcomes for Children With Complex Learning, Mental Health, and Health Needs: Lessons Learned From Families, Teachers, and Service Providers

Sun, April 15, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Marriott Pinnacle, Floor: Fourth Level, Ambleside

Abstract

Recent estimates are that one in every five children and adolescents in the United States is experiencing difficulties with social and emotional development and 30% of children have at least one chronic illness. Even with support at the federal, state, and school level, a “concept of care” for children with complex learning, mental health and health needs has been difficult to realize. This qualitative study aimed to discover and demonstrate the consequences of not having a well- integrated and flexible service delivery system by exploring the experiences of families, teachers and service providers. This presentation will include emerging themes and critical implications for the interdisciplinary collaboration, home-school partnerships, parent advocacy, and educational policies and practices.
