Transferring Problem-Solving Skills in Art Education: Preservice Elementary Candidates’ Perceptions of the Relationship to Mathematics Education

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether elementary pre-service candidates’ transferred their use of problem solving strategies in a visual arts course to their work in mathematics content courses. This quantitative, descriptive statistics, survey study utilized a forced response Likert-type scale to capture subjects’ understanding. Results indicate that although subjects recognize their use of problem-solving strategies in both fields, they are not aware of the similarities that exist in solving problems in both areas. When pre-service elementary candidates are cognizant of the commonalities of problem solving skills across the curriculum, they will be better prepared to develop instructional activities to reinforce those skills not only in the arts, but also in the common core subjects as well.
