Abstract

This study is an examination of the impact of a therapeutic equine program on the development of leadership and self-advocacy skills for both individuals with developmental disabilities and their nondisabled peers. Participants include students attending a university certification program designed for individuals with developmental disabilities and typical college students enrolled in a university service-learning course. Program impact is evaluated through self- and peer-ratings targeting three areas associated with leadership and self-advocacy: (1) mindful thinking, (2) social skills, and (3) personal interaction skills. Findings from the study are presented with implications for the scholarly impact of this project.
