Abstract

This study examines the academic mentoring experiences of three undergraduate pre-service teachers who needed to work directly with youth to complete university practicum requirements. Their work in an afterschool program to support underperforming Latino youth was observed and documented by two researchers during tutoring time and debriefing discussions. Researchers worked to uncover and analyze the process by which academic mentors reflected on challenges and developed solutions to those challenges through experimenting with the social organization of the activity space. Of particular interest were the apprenticeship dynamics that took hold, in which one veteran educator modeled for the other two novice tutors good teaching practices.
