A Qualitative Playfulness-Based Research Method as a Tool for Crossing Boundaries and Involving Children in Research

Abstract

A qualitative playfulness-based research method refers to a powerful boundary-crossing method with the aim of involving young children in research and artifact development. The method evolved during the development of an innovative technology-enriched playground construction designed for pre-primary and primary education. In this paper, we introduce the method with its features and interpret it through the theories of boundary-crossing and boundary objects. The features are as follows: embodiment, creativity, narrativity, collaboration, insight, emotions, concretization, and authenticity. The results indicate that playfulness, as a research method, provides a variety of possibilities for negotiations between different social worlds.
