Learning From Non-English Speaking Parents: Preservice Teachers’ Experiences

• In Event: Preparing Teachers to Work With English Language Learners and Immigrant Students

Abstract

This study aims to contribute to the field of teacher education, specifically, how to help pre-service teachers gain understanding of non-English speaking parents’ views about education and their struggles with home-school involvement. Conclusions show that pre-service teachers positively expand their frame of reference regarding how low-income non-English-speaking parents feel about their children’s education when permitted to observe and interview parents during and after a Family Math evening event.
