[Dis]ableing Inclusion: Critical Personal Narratives of How Inclusion Can Exclude

Abstract

This paper punctuates autobiographical narratives published by former special education students with analyses that examine inclusive practices. These critical personal narratives of schooling reveal with remarkable insight how ableist practices instituted in an unproblematized or unexamined manner can have exclusionary effects. Author autobiographies to be examined include [Title] by [Author], The Short Bus by Jonathan Mooney, and Faking It by Christopher Lee. Analyses draw on the notion of [dis]ableing to trouble the relationship between special education and inclusion policies and practices that perpetuate such inequities.
