The Relationship Between Supplemental Instruction Leader Learning Style and Study Session Design

Abstract

Although student learning styles have been studied for some time, the learning styles of the Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader and how this may relate to study session design has not been explored. This qualitative study examined the learning styles of SI Leaders employed by a learning center at a large, public university to determine whether or not the Leaders’ personal learning styles influenced the design and development of their out-of-class study sessions. Four major themes emerged: 1) Leader personal experience incorporated into study session design, 2) the sense of Leader impact on student learning, 3) Leader need to incorporate varied activities into study session design, and 4) the importance of students taking ownership of their own learning.
