This paper presents findings from a qualitative study of the contemporary job of Instructional Designer. By contemporary we mean an expansion of the traditional notion of instructional design to include workplace learning and performance. Data were obtained using qualitative inquiry that included documentary analyses and interviews. Preliminary findings suggest that workplace expertise associated with the contemporary position of instructional designer is dynamic, complex, and varied; contingent on the workplace learning and performance needs of institutions and organizations. We present these findings and reconcile them within the context of the ADDIE instructional design model and the competencies associated with workplace learning and performance. Implications of these findings are discussed along with suggestions for future research.
