Abstract

Many authors expressed their concern that US competitiveness in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is losing ground. International comparisons, such as Trends for International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), show that US students lag behind their counterparts in other nations. President Obama introduced the phrase "Sputnik moment" to characterize this situation. In response to the STEM performance gap problem, this study will investigate how factors such as academic self-concept, instrumental motivation, and the instructional strategies delivered by the teachers in East Asian nations and America influence student performance in TIMSS mathematics and science in Fourth and Eighth grades using Hierarchical Linear Modeling. Subjects from Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, and America will be included in this study.
