Collective Teacher Efficacy and Student Achievement: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract

Collective teacher efficacy reflects the beliefs of a faculty about the ability to promote success in school. In this meta-analysis, 26 studies that reported a correlation between collective teacher efficacy and student achievement were systematically synthesized in a number of ways to yield weighted mean effect sizes ranging from 0.537 to 0.628. Moderator analysis revealed that the effect sizes varied depending on both instrument used to measure CTE and the university affiliation of the researchers. Collective teacher efficacy and student achievement are strongly associated. This finding has implications for teacher education, education policy, administration, and professional development programs. Interventions aimed at improving collective teacher efficacy could be an actionable point for positive change within a school system.
