Examining the College Preparation and Postsecondary Progress of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Graduates at Universities and Community Colleges

Abstract

This quantitative study examined the college preparation and postsecondary progress of a national sample of 285 high school graduates who participated in Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) while in high school. Now enrolled in community colleges and universities, most of these participants are from groups typically underrepresented in higher education. Large portions of these students were persisting through the second semester of college and utilizing study habits and organizational strategies learned in AVID for assistance. Findings indicate that taking a course for college credit while in high school and one’s overall high school GPA are predictive of success once in college. Additional findings and recommendations are based on comparisons between students enrolled in universities and those enrolled in community colleges.
