This presentation describes the results of a seven month qualitative study that explored the development of Head Start teachers’ conceptual understanding of emergent literacy as a result of implementing a comprehensive preschool literacy curriculum in their classrooms. The curriculum integrated shared reading and phonological awareness, targeting oral language, phonological awareness, and letter knowledge. Data collected included: concept maps, interviews, observations, and questionnaires. The results indicate that after implementing the curriculum teachers had a more complex understanding of emergent literacy.
