Abstract

If teacher educators and those that affect teachers within schools have insight about why teachers remain committed to their students, schools and education over a great number of years, they will know how to support more novice teachers to continue on this path. However, non satis sacire: to know is not enough. Acting upon this is the next step. What can be done so that we ensure that teachers will remain in the profession, and particularly, in hard-to-fill schools? This research focuses on themes that emerge from survey and interview data collected from veteran teachers at Nanaikapono Elementary on Oahu’s Leeward Coast. With the hope that teacher retention improves, suggestions will be offered to those who can make a difference.
