The goal of this 24-week study was to examine how children in third and fourth grade develop as writers through artist-writer partnerships. Drawing in response to someone else’s writing, this study examines how elementary children make visual and verbal connections by experiencing intention, abstraction, and interpretation through a collaborative project on constructing meaning through art and language. Substantive work is still needed to help learners develop literacy through art “in subject areas outside of art” (Cowan & Albers, 2006, p. 125).
