Trading Spaces: A Model of Children’s Transition Into a New Classroom

Abstract

Although there are studies that investigate school transitions (such as middle to high school) the more occuring transitions that occur as students move between classrooms within the same school have not been explored. As Tertell, Kein, and Jewett (1998) implied, the transitions between classrooms and contexts might not be as easy as they appear on the surface. My study investigated the challenges, compromises, and successes that former fourth grade students have in acquiring particular classroom literacy practices as they repositioned themselves with new teachers in new classrooms at a new grade level.
